Boehringer Ingelheim

A leading pharmaceutical company wanted to create a digital companion to their market leading treatment for COPD, a respiratory condition affecting over 15 million Americans. They came to Medullan with a simple, but compelling ask: “Use digital technology to improve the lives of patients living with COPD.”

To identify our approach we engaged in a strategy phase to define the core product strategy and engage in discovery research to uncover patients’ most pressing unmet needs. We synthesized this research into personas and targeted user needs statements.

This year-long project then flowed into strategic experience design, business model creation,
and agile development.

The solution we finally envisioned was two-fold, first, to leverage connected devices and telehealth to improve access to diagnosis (nearly half of all COPD cases are undiagnosed).

Secondly, to drive medication adherence with a digital companion for that leveraged behavior change techniques along with critical patient relationships.
